Interactive Cross-References

Cross-references connect the study content in Filament to your Filament edition Bible. When a note points you to another passage, you can read it on the spot, and/or turn to the page in your Bible when you want the full context. These passages are the only Scripture the app displays. Filament does not include the full Bible text.

Opening a passage

A cross-reference appears in the text as a link, underlined with a dotted line, for example:

Tap it, and a panel opens from the bottom of the screen with that passage inside.

What you'll see

The panel shows three things:

  • The reference, at the top, so you always know what you're reading.

  • The page number where that passage falls in your Filament edition Bible.

  • The passage itself, with verse numbers, exactly as it appears in your Bible.

If the passage is longer than the panel, scroll inside it to read the rest.

About the page number

The page number is how the app points you back to your Bible. The panel shows only the verses the note refers to. Your Bible shows everything around them: the chapter and the flow of the story. When a reference is worth more than a quick look, turn to that page and keep reading there.

Page numbers are different in every Filament edition, so the number you see is the one for the Bible you have selected in the app. If it sends you somewhere unexpected, check which Bible is active under Switch to a different Bible and make sure it matches the one in your hands.

The only Scripture the app shows

A cross-reference opens the passage it points to, and nothing beyond it. Filament does not carry the full Bible text, and it never displays a whole book, chapter, or page of Scripture.

Going back to what you were reading

Swipe down to close the panel and you return to exactly where you left off in the study content. Nothing is lost.

Common questions

Does this mean the Bible is in the app now? No. Cross-references are the only Scripture Filament displays, and only the passage a note points to. The full Bible text isn't in the app and never appears.

Can I search for a passage or type in a reference? Not at this time. The passages you can open are the ones the study content points to. To find a specific passage, use your print Bible.

Can I keep reading past the passage that opens? The panel shows the passage the note refers to and stops there. To read what comes before or after it, turn to the page number shown and continue in your Bible.

Why doesn't every reference open a passage? If a reference isn't tappable, make sure you're on the latest version of the app.

Does the page number work for any Bible? It's the page number for the Filament edition you have selected in the app. Page numbers vary between editions, so switching your active Bible changes the number you see.

Is this free? Yes. Tapping a cross-reference to read the passage is included at no cost.
