Accessibility
Filament is built to make Bible study richer for everyone. This article covers the accessibility options available in the app today, how to pair access your device’s own built in accessibility tools, and where to get help if something is not working for you.
Listening instead of reading
Filament includes streaming audio, so you can listen to Bible content rather than read it on screen. This is helpful if you have low vision, find long reading sessions tiring, or simply prefer to listen while following along in your print Bible.
One thing to know: Filament does not currently remember your exact spot inside an audio section. If you switch to another passage and come back, you may need to find your place again.
Using your device’s accessibility settings
Because Filament runs on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device, you can turn on your device’s built in accessibility features while you use it.
On iPhone or iPad:
Larger text: Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Larger Text
Screen reader: Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver
Magnify the screen: Settings > Accessibility > Zoom
Have text read aloud: Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content
On Android:
Font and display size: Settings > Accessibility > Font size (and Display size)
Screen reader: Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack
Magnify the screen: Settings > Accessibility > Magnification
Zooming in on maps and visuals
In the See section, interactive maps and images let you pinch to zoom in and out and tap on key locations, so you can get a closer look at the details that matter to you.
In-app Display Options
To access settings, click More in the navigation menu, then tap App Settings.
Adjust text size: for comfortable reading at any zoom level
Choose your theme: to suit your environment and visual preference
Change the language: of the app interface
Remove badges: from reading plans icon
Hide device status bar icons: for a cleaner, more focused reading experience
Closed Captions
The Filament app includes many videos you can watch, and most of them offer closed captions, which display the spoken words on screen as text while the video plays.
Turning captions on or off
Open the video you'd like to watch in the Filament app.
Look for the closed captions icon (CC) on the video player.
Tap the CC icon to open CC menu, and enable captions. When captions are active, the icon will appear highlighted, and the text will begin showing on screen as the video plays.
To turn captions off, tap the CC icon again, and select Off. The highlight will disappear and the captions will no longer display.
You can turn captions on or off at any point while a video is playing, so feel free to switch between them whenever you like.
“I don't see the CC icon on my video. “
If the closed captions icon isn't showing on a particular video, that video likely doesn't have captions available. Not every video includes them.
“My captions aren't appearing”
Try tapping the icon and disabling/enabling captions again, or closing and reopening the video. If captions still don't show, please reach out to our support team and we'll be happy to help.
Finding content in Filament
Filament is a companion to a Filament enabled print Bible. The main way to pull up content is to scan the page you are reading with your device’s camera, and the app then shows the study notes, devotionals, audio, videos, and maps tied to that page. Good lighting helps scanning work smoothly.
Devices and availability
Filament is available on iPhone and iPad (iOS 15.5 or later) and on Android phones and tablets (Android 8.0 (Oreo) or later). There is no Mac, desktop, or web version at this time. The app interface is in English.
